There are plenty of different options when it comes to money exchange in Vietnam. Some obvious places to exchange foreign currency to Vietnamese Dong are airport, hotels and banks. Also, there are ATMs available scattered all around Hanoi making it easy for both foreigners and locals to withdraw money.
However, the above options usually offer lower rates than when you exchange at jewellery shops. While some may prefer the convenience of exchanging money at these above places, some, like myself, might want to maximise the amount we can get for the very same sum of money.
For small amount of money, the total difference might not be worth the effort of looking for these jewellery shops with better rates. However, if you’re going to change a big sum or simply in for the experience of searching, check the list below.
The list below consists of three different streets with jewellery shops famous for best rates in the Old Quarter.
Ha Trung street nearby the Hang Da market is where I go for currency exchange. There are numerous shops along the street, so you can go into different ones to check the rates and pick the best one.
The shop that is most often recommended by many others and the one I always go to is the number 27 on Ha Trung street.

Hang Bac is the original street for gold and silver goods as the name suggests (Bac means silver). There are many jewellery shops on the street. However, not all of these shops offer money exchange. So look for the signs “Money Exchange” at the counter.
Address: Hàng Bạc, Hàng Đào, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội, Vietnam
25 Lương Ngọc Quyến
Phu Van jewellery shop is located right in the centre of beer street and this shop is also well-known for good exchange rates. However, when I checked the rates few days ago, this shop wasn’t the best compared to the other two streets. So if you have time, you can check and compare with other places.
