Another one of must try foods for foodies in Hanoi is rice congee, which is an amazing breakfast in Hanoi! I’ve mentioned this in the Top 5 Popular Breakfast menus in Hanoi article. Rice congee called cháo in Vietnamese is certainly one of the most popular breakfast menus in Vietnam.
I love a hot bowl of congee for my breakfast! While there are plenty of congee shops to be spotted all around Hanoi as well as throughout Vietnam, I have one favourite place. I’ve been going here every now and then since about 5 years ago even before I moved to Hanoi. Since I moved to Hanoi over a year ago, I live outside of Old Quarter, but I still love going here for my favourite cháo occasionally.
My Favourite Cháo – Must Try Breakfast in Hanoi
The place is a street restaurant with plastic chairs located in front of shops. The sweet lady wearing a hat on the left is the owner of this place. I remember when I first went here, she was surprised to have a foreigner because obviously her customers are all locals. Maybe I was the first or one of the first few foreigners who came to her little congee shop.
I heard that her house is inside the small alley and she opens her restaurant just outside of the alley before shops open. Every time I go here, I’m amazed to see how many people come to either eat here or buy take away to bring to work. However, if you taste the congee, you’ll understand why.
Congee - Cháo Quẩy
You can order a bowl of plain congee and enjoy it alone. However, my favourite is to order cháo quẩy, which is congee with fried baguette. So I have a bowl of hot congee topped with chopped fried baguette. Then I sprinkle some chilli powder because I love spicy food. I know it may look somewhat heavy and too spicy for a breakfast, but I recommend you give it a try! It’s YUMMM!
What’s amazing is how cheap it is. One bowl of plain congee is 10,000VND and with the fried baguette, it is 12,000VND. If you’ve tried the famous Hanoi pho and you’re looking for another great breakfast menu, cháo should be on your list!
The place opens early morning from 6:15AM and closes around 10AM. However, I’d suggest you to go earlier than 10 o’clock because it could be sold out before 10.
Another famous place for cháo
In addition, there’s another famous place for congee breakfast in Old Quarter, Hanoi. The place is called Quán Cháo Đậu Cà Đào Duy Tư. I tried both places and the congee here is ground much finer than the one mentioned above. My boyfriend prefers the congee here and I prefer the one in Hang Bac.
I love how the two places are different. So I also recommend you this place in case you want another option. Plus, this shop is open in the afternoon as well. Thus, it’ll be a perfect alternative if you cannot make it to Hang Bac in the morning.
