I have quite a long list of restaurants and Vietnamese dishes I have tried over the past 6 years of travelling and living in Hanoi. Since my food journey is never-ending, there are many more restaurants to be discovered and to try. But from my list so far, I have few places I always go back and definitely recommend for any travellers who love local dishes and dining experiences. So I narrowed down to top 10 local restaurants in Hanoi for foodies living in or travelling to Hanoi.
I am confident that you can have fantastic dining experiences of delectable Vietnamese cuisine if you select from this list!
Pho Ga Nguyet - Top Mixed Pho in Hanoi
While the world-famous pho is typically known as noodle soup, there’s another variety of pho dish, which is mixed pho. All my local friends in Hanoi and I have been regularly going for mixed pho in Pho Ga Nguyet, which is a famous restaurant for this dish. In Vietnamese, the dish is called pho tron. The pho tron here is served with soft chicken meat spread with sweet flavoured soy sauce. And I have never been disappointed in this restaurant. It is just scrumptious! I love it for dinner, but also sometimes for a late-night food after going out for drinks.

Pho Xao Bo - Best Stir-fried Pho with Beef
This is a street restaurant located on Hang Buom street, which is in the very centre of Old Quarter in Hanoi. I have tried this dish in other places, but this place is certainly the top stir-fried noodle in Hanoi. The beef part they use is so soft but also has a good texture to chew. And unlike some places where they make the dish too liquid, here, they do it perfectly moist without excess of juice. I also highly recommend ordering a bowl of beef shank soup on the side.

BBQ Gam Cau - Vietnamese BBQ Under Railway
Vietnamese BBQ is one of the most common and enjoyed dinner options for Vietnamese locals. Their style is enjoying the bbq with margarine, which means it’s inevitably delicious. I enjoy having it for dinner sometimes and the only place I go for this bbq is on Gam Cau street. It’s a narrow street beside the railway bridge and the street is filled with BBQ restaurants. The ambiance is so unique. I highly recommended this as one of the top dining experiences in Hanoi.

Bun Cha Hang Quat - Top Local Dining Experience
Bun cha as one of the most famous and top dishes in Hanoi is a must try along with the notorious pho. Out of many other bun cha restaurants, I have one specific place I’d recommend to anyone for an amazing bun cha as well as a fantastic local dining experience. Bun Cha Hang Quat is a very well-known restaurant in Hanoi, but it is located inside a residential hub behind a narrow alley in the Old Quarter. So I love this hidden and unique restaurant and of course, their bun cha is very rich and flavourful.

Bun Ca Sam Cay Si - Famous Rice Noodle Soup with Fish
Here’s another of my favourite local restaurants and also a famous restaurant in Hanoi. Bun ca is rice noodle soup with fish and Bun Ca Sam Cay Si is one of the top places for this dish in Hanoi. Their soup is sweet and sour and they serve a very generous portion of fish, noodle and lots of veggies in the soup. Located in a narrow alley near Hanoi’s beer street, it’s also a great place for local dining experience.

Bit Tet - Vietnamese Beef Steak
You might wonder why beef steak in Hanoi. But it’s a very different kind of beef steak from western style. I personally find it super cute how the name Bit Tet is derived from bifteck, which is beef steak in French. Vietnamese has interpreted the dish in a special way and it’s usually served on a steaming hot grill plate. The usual ingredients are beef, egg, pate and chips topped with thick sauce. I think it’s a good change of food experience from other local Vietnamese dishes.

Bun Ngan - Famous Duck Noodle Soup in Hanoi
Bun Ngan Nhan is another very well-known restaurant in Hanoi for the top quality duck. Bun ngan is rice noodle soup with duck meat. And I really like the soft duck meat here. It’s always super crowded with locals proving how popular this place is. I recommend going here earlier than 1PM because sometimes it can be sold out earlier than they close. It’s also located on the same street as Bun Ca Sam Cay Si, so in case it’s sold out, you can go for the rice noodle soup with fish next door.

BBQ Chicken Feet - Top Pick for Chicken Feet in Hanoi
If you’re familiar with eating chicken feet or would like to try it for the first time here in Hanoi, I recommend this place. It’s a popular chicken feet BBQ place and their sauce is super yummy. Also, it is the place with top grilled banh mi with honey in Hanoi. If you’re not up for chicken feet, you can order BBQ chicken wings and banh mi, which won’t disappoint!

Cha Ca Thang Long - Hanoi Original Dish, Grilled Fish
Cha ca is one of the dishes always on top of the list recommended in Hanoi. Its history goes back over a century and is originated in Hanoi. The fish is marinated with turmeric sauce and enjoyed on a grill on table with lots of veggies. I fell in love with this dish since the first time I tried and it’s always a good option for lunch or dinner.

Long Ran Nhat Quan - Favourite Fried Pork Intestines
Lastly, one of my regular dinner options is long ran – fried pork intestines. I love the chewy texture of intestines and Long Ran Nhat Quan restaurant has been my top choice for intestines in Hanoi. You can enjoy a good variety of pork intestines from steamed to deep-fried and pork ribs along with fresh rice noodle. This restaurant is also always packed with locals every single day. So I also love the local atmosphere of the place as much as the yummy dishes.
