Top 5 Hidden Gem Cafes in Hanoi

Having a nice cup of coffee at a coffee shop is definitely one of the things I enjoy very much both when I’m travelling and as part of my daily routine.

Vietnam is a country of coffee and people love hanging out at cafes with their friends, families and coworkers. So there are coffee shops everywhere, one next to another. As a cafe explorer, it is one of the reasons why I love Vietnam.

I have been exploring quite some coffee shops in Hanoi and there are few that I always go back to again and again. I have brought my friends and families who are visiting as well as friends who just moved to Hanoi to my favourite cafes and they all also fall in love with the places.

I will introduce you to my top 5 favourite hidden gems in Hanoi and I really hope you’ll get to visit at least one of them when you’re in the city!

1. Tranquil Books & Coffee

As the name suggests you can enjoy a tranquil atmosphere to read a book, work on your laptop or have a nice chat with friends. It is a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city for a while.

The interior design resembles a small bookshop or a library with bookshelves on the walls. And the ambiance is so cosy that you may want to stay here for longer than you anticipate.

There are three Tranquil Books & Coffee shops in Hanoi and my personal favourite is the one in Ba Dinh because of the tiny balcony where I can enjoy the view over the street and privacy.

2. Hidden Gem Coffee

This one is another hidden gem right in the centre of Hanoi’s Old Quarter. The sign on the street is very small but when you find it, walk into the tiny alley where colourfully decorated plastic bottles are hanging above you and there’s lots more inside to discover.

Grandmother of the owner here taught him to be considerate of throwing things away and discover what those can serve in a different way. Hence, this cafe is full of creatively transformed and rejuvenated old items and waste. It’s quite mind-blowing to see an ordinary object living a whole new life serving a new purpose just like the yellow door as a table and tyres as chairs in the photo above.

3. Little Plan Coffee – Kế Hoạch Nhỏ café

Little Plan Coffee has a more traditional Vietnamese vibe of a local house. Although the space is small, every corner and detail of this place is so mindfully decorated. The sweet young lady who owns and runs this cafe told me that her boyfriend is a wood carpenter who designed and created all the wooden furniture here. How cool!

The entrance is hidden inside a typical Hanoi’s residential building, so you’ll have to look carefully in order to find the narrow alley leading you to the entrance.

4. Gau Coffee Roaster

When you open the glass door and step into this coffee shop, you’ll be immediately tempted to have one, if not all of those yummy looking pastries greeting you. There’s the baking area on the second floor and you know this means you’re getting a real deal here.

I always choose to sit outside on the second floor because of its open space  where you can sit and enjoy the beautiful architecture of Hanoi in front of you and people walking around on the street.

5. Trill RooftopCafe

Trill Rooftop is situated in a local district in Hanoi, about 25-minute motorbike or taxi ride from Hoan Kiem district (the Old Quarter). The cafe is on the 26th floor and is an awesome spot to enjoy Hanoi’s cityscape. It is a huge cafe with different areas decorated in different themes and there’s even a swimming pool.

I personally prefer going here in the evening to enjoy the night skyline of the city because when I visited this place during the day a couple of times, the sky wasn’t clear enough for me to enjoy the view to the fullest. And the sky in Hanoi tends to be almost always not so clear.
